The Baggy Gospel : Earth Swag Happenings

The Baggy Gospel

by Sara O'Connor on 03/06/11

On Friday, I went on a showshoe fieldtrip with 40 second graders at the top of Aspen mountain.  We had a fantastic time (thank you Aspen Center for Environmental Study and the Aspen Ski Patrol, especially Zoot the mountain rescue dog!)  But at lunch time, we all sat down with our packed lunches and I was appalled at what I saw: plastic everywhere.  Now, intellectually I know that this is the case when children pack a lunch, and that is the reason I started making fabric baggies.  I know that there is too much plastic, I know that it gets used once and thrown away, I know all of these things...but, to see it in action was particularly nauseating.  One mom, who had asked me about my business while we snowshoed and thus was becoming a convert to the need for less plastic, reported that she threw away at least 11 plastic bags while cleaning up at ONE table.  So, because of our trip up Ajax, I have a renewed sense of purpose for my business, and there is one new convert to the fabric-bag cause.  A good day :)  (for a picture of Earth Swag being used at the top of Aspen Mountain, check out the wall of fame)
